Core Tip: Allergy UK is building awareness to children that suffer from cow’s milk allergies (CMA), after surveys revealed 7% of babies and 70% of infants had experienced reactions, but 70% of parents did not link them to allergies.
“If you’re not looking for CMA, you won’t find it,” said Dr Adam Fox paediatric allergy specialist and chair and trustee of the Allergy UK Health Advisory Board.

“That is why it is important for both healthcare professionals and parents to be informed about the symptoms of cows’ milk allergy and consider it earlier.”

Allergy UK is taking its campaign to healthcare professionals to help ease the problem that can leave parents feeling powerless if they don’t make the allergy link.

Typical symptoms include skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and respiratory complaints, which can be attributed to other conditions by doctors and symptoms can be delayed.

70% of doctors said they would like more CMA information with 77% of GPs and health visitors agreeing they would be better placed to give support to parents if they were better informed.

Up to 20% of children allergic to milk are also allergic to beef.

Typical cow's milk alternatives include coconut milk, rice milk, soy milk, oat milk and almond milk including infant formulas based on these or others like carob seeds.
