Core Tip: The Food Standards Agency is inviting tenders for a research study of the levels of environmental metal contaminants in fruits, vegetables, and cereals grown in the UK.
The European Commission is currently reviewing the levels of certain metals in foodstuffs and the study will inform the Agency’s negotiating position with the European Union in regard to appropriate and proportionate safety limits for metals in food.

Through this study the Agency is obtaining data on the levels of metals in UK grown fruits, vegetables, and cereals, and the distribution of these metal contaminants from the outer skin or layer to the core of the produce. This data will aid the development of our current consumer advice to ensure that it remains appropriate and help inform and review our current ‘wash and peel’ advice.
