Core Tip: E. coli bacteria and excessive levels of additives were identified in some frozen food items and beverages in Taipei.
According to Taipei City's Department of Health, about 69 beverages and 62 frozen food items were checked. About four beverages and two frozen products were found to contain E. coli and other bacteria.

The products were also assessed for the levels of 41 ingredients. It was found that three products had high levels of levels of preservatives, artificial sweeteners and coloring agents.

Ahead of Dragon Boat Festival which falls on 23 June, the department evaluated the ingredients in zongzi - a glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves, which are traditionally eaten during the festival. Six of the 100 randomly selected items were found to be below standard.

In addition, the department checked samples of meat sold at traditional and wholesale markets and supermarkets. However, out of 20 samples, only one product failed to meet safety standards as it contained excessive levels of sulphonamide.

The department said has asked the sellers to remove the sub-standard products from their shelves, and plans to impose penalties after further testing.
