The E.coli O157 assay has been designed to work with the 3M Molecular Detection System, which the company claims is the only of its kind to combine isothermal DNA amplification and bioluminescence detection, allowing for “fast and reliable” pathogen testing. It has been found to be equivalent to standard reference methods used by the UK’s Food Standards Agency and the US Department of Agriculture for the detection of the E.coli O157 in a range of products, including raw ground beef.

“AOAC-PTM approval of 3M’s Salmonella and E.coli O157 (including H7) assays are the first of numerous validations for this product line, emphasising the value of a pathogen detection solution that is fast, accurate, easy-to-use and affordable.”
E.coli O157 is responsible for an estimated 73,000 cases of food-borne illness annually in the US, second only to salmonella. The verification of the E.coli O157 assay follows an earlier verification of 3M Food Safety’s Salmonella assay from the AOAC Research Institute.
