The twelve product lines being recalled were found to present choking, strangulation and projectile toy hazards and included bath toys, toy guns, wind-up toys and a pressure sketch pad, all of which breached mandatory Australian safety standards or bans. Over 3,300 of the toys have already been seized and will be destroyed as a result of Consumer Affairs Victoria’s successful prosecution of the Moorabbin-based importer and wholesaler. The maximum penalty for trading in unsafe products is a fine of $1.1 million for a corporation or $220,000 for an individual.
In addition to the toys being recalled, the supplier is restricted from selling such products until a satisfactory product safety compliance programme has been instituted.
