Meca Foods, a food company based in Chicago, US, is recalling 2,970 pounds of tamales, as they were produced at a facility that was not inspected by state officials.
The recall, in which nearly 13,500 items are being withdrawn from the market, has been classified as Class I, which indicates a high health risk.
The products being recalled feature the following labels: Home Style tamales - Green Pork; Home Style Tamales - Red Pork; and Home Style Tamales - Chicken. They bear the establishment number EST. 699 inside the Illinois mark of inspection. However, this number does not belong to the firm.
The tamales were produced between April 2011 and September 2012, and were sold to brokers and restaurants in Chicago. The Illinois Department of Agriculture has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products.
Consumers who are concerned that they may have contracted a food-borne illness have been advised to contact a health care provider.
