The British Army has given the nation’s biggest high street baker its marching orders by enlisting Greggs in a trial to supply baked savouries to Germany.

Greggs will partner the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAFI) in delivering frozen savouries to the military base at Gutersloh, Germany.

The trial – which starts today September 17 – will run for 12 weeks. After assessing the results, military and Greggs’ bosses will decide whether the savouries will be made available to British airmen, soldiers and seamen across the globe.

On offer will be seven frozen savouries, including sausage rolls, steak bakes, chilli bakes and sausage and bean melts, which will be baked daily and displayed in a branded savoury counter.

The baker will train NAAFI personnel to ensure the troops get top quality, said the baker.

Armed forces personnel

When armed forces personnel were asked what items they miss most from home, top of the list was Greggs, claimed the baker.

Ken McMeikan, Greggs chief executive, said “It’s great to hear that Greggs was the most requested brand that troops missed from home and we are really pleased to be making our savouries accessible to our troops in Germany, and, depending on the success of the trial, more widely available for our armed forces personnel around the world.”

Mike Chapman, NAFFI head of customer service, said “We are delighted to be able to bring customers the taste of home that they have been asking for. Greggs is one of the most popular brands on the UK high street for its iconic sausage rolls and pasties, and our customers want us to deliver that to them during their NAAFI break.”
