The Vancouver Aquarium and Canadian sustainability advocacy group SeaChoice have started a campaign to establish a national sustainable seafood day.

SeaChoice, together with the aquarium’s Ocean Wise program, are suggesting the country adopt 18 March as the day advocates use to spearhead educational programs about seafood sustainability.

"Canada has three oceans which have given us safe, wild seafood sources for millennia,” said Susanna Fuller, SeaChoice representative from the Ecology Action Centre. “It is high time we celebrate that fact and raise awareness about the importance of fishing this food source sustainably to ensure social, economic and environmental viability for future generations."

But it’s not just for NGOs. Ned Bell, executive chef at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver also supported the concept.

“I am a father and a chef, as well as a proud and passionate supporter of sustainability,” Bell said. “I want to use my platform to educate and continue raising awareness for our lakes, oceans and rivers. 'Globally inspired, locally created' together, we can make a difference.”
