During the period 2008 – 2012, the import value of scallops into China rose by over 600 per cent. From 2011 to 2012 alone, the value rose by 180 per cent.
Last year, China was the sixth largest importer of bivalve molluscs originating from Viet Nam after the EU, Japan, the US, South Korea and ASEAN, reports VASEP.
However, in 2012, exports of bivalve molluscs to China-Hong Kong dropped 20.4 per cent from 2011 due to the instability of the export price.
In January-February 2013, Viet Nam’s bivalve mollusc export value to China-Hong Kong scored, with an increase of 454 per cent from the same period of 2012.
In 2012, China continued to import a large volume of oysters and clams from Viet Nam. Annually, China imported about $13 million of molluscs from Viet Nam, largely clam. However, in 2012, Canada and Thailand were the two largest clam suppliers for China, accounting for 80 – 97 per cent of total clam imports into the country.
