Core Tip: The executive manager of Winter Cereals Canada expects a strong demand this year in the United States for winter wheat grown in western Canada, writes Bruce Cochrane.
Although dry weather last fall prompted farmers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan to cut the number of acres seeded to fall seeded cereal crops those crops have come through the winter in good condition.

Jake Davidson, the executive manager of Winter Cereals Canada, says marketing opportunities for winter wheat are looking good.

Jake Davidson-Winter Cereals Canada

We made a name for ourselves last year.

When the US market was in bad shape, when they didn't have a crop what happened was that they drew on the Canadian winter wheat crop and they saw the high quality of it.

With that high quality winter wheat crop I think we gained some believers.

Dollar wise I haven't heard too much yet but the Wheat Board is offering contracts, there's lots of opportunities to contract your crop with the different organizations so I think it's a good strong market.

I think things are looking pretty good.

There's nothing like a happy customer to have them come back.

When people want the crop and they have good experience with it they're willing to pay a little bit more.

I read some things, everything isn't perfect in the US this year.

They're not getting 100 per cent ideal conditions which again gives us opportunity and we've still got the rest of the world too that likes our crop.

It's just a matter of last year we managed to move most of it to the US where as typically large amounts went to overseas locations.

Mr Davidson notes there's one year left before CDC Falcon moves to the Canada Western General Purpose class from Canada Western Red Winter while other varieties will move to the general purpose class 1 August of this year.
