Cargill has reached a tentative memorandum of understanding with the local union chapter representing workers at its processing plant just outside High River, Alta.

The deal, which still needs to be approved by a simple majority of the membership, was reached late Thursday night, said United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1118 president Albert Johnson.

Johnson says the union will not release details of the agreement until it is approved by the membership.

If ratified, the memorandum of understanding will form the basis of the next collective bargaining agreement, as well as avert a possible strike by the plant’s roughly 2,000 employees.

Cargill did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
