Core Tip: As the supply of Copper River salmon rises, retail prices are falling and supermarkets are running a variety of promotions.
Dorothy Lane Market On Friday 21 June Whole Foods Market will hold a one-day sale on Wild Alaska sockeye salmon in its U.S. stores. The retailer, will sell the salmon for USD 11.99 (EUR 9.08) a pound — a significant discount compared to the typical wild sockeye salmon price.

Dayton, Ohio-based Dorothy Lane Market is running two different events promoting Copper River salmon. Last weekend, it held a Salmon Sandwich Cookout at all three of its stores. Dorothy Lane staff grilled Bear Cove king salmon sandwiches for shoppers, and sold them for USD 9.50 (EUR 7.19) each.

“It is our second most popular cookout that we do every year,” Tom Winter, VP of marketing for Dorothy Lane Market, told SeafoodSource.

Dorothy Lane will also hold an Alaska salmon sidewalk sale from 4 July through 6 July. Because the salmon are “still in the water,” the retailer has not yet set a retail price for the sockeye salmon that will be featured during the sale.

“We just buy a certain number and when we run out, we run out. We sell the whole fish to customers and if they want us to fillet them, we fillet them right there,” Winter said.

This week, Dorothy Lane is also featuring Copper River king salmon for USD 22.99 (EUR 17.41) a pound, discounted from USD 29.99 (EUR 22.71) a pound last week.

Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee is going all out to promote Alaskan salmon this season. It is sponsoring a dedicated website featuring salmon recipes and videos, along with an explanation about how the salmon that Hy-Vee purchases is caught.

“Hy-Vee salmon is sustainably caught…Our partners at Copper River Seafoods are committed to using responsible fishing practices and adhere to strict quotas. Once quotas are met, the fishing season ends, which helps to protect salmon populations for future generations,” Hy-Vee stated on the web site.

Hy-Vee is retailing Prince William Sound sockeye salmon for USD 11.98 (EUR 9.07) a pound, Alaska salmon fajita meat for USD 8.75 (EUR 6.63) a pound, and “Chef Kim’s Salmon Burgers” at two for USD 6.00 (EUR 4.54).
