On June 17, 2013, the Government of India’s Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries notified the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of country freedom from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The declaration follows India’s only reported HPAI outbreak of 2013, which occurred on March 11 on a government poultry farm in Bihar state’s Purnea district. In response to the outbreak, measures to control and eradicate the disease were taken as outlined in India’s “Action Plan of Animal Husbandry for Preparedness, Control and Containment of Avian Influenza.”
