Ghana has broken ground on an $11m fish processing facility in Elmina, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) district, in the Central Region.
The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, in partnership with India-based Expotec International. It is expected to be completed in 18 months, reported the Ghana News Agency.
In addition to the seafood processing facility, the project will involve the construction of fish waste processing section, cold stores, packaging section, offices and canteen.
The new facility will have a capacity of 100t and the products will be suitable for export. The waste from processing facility will be used as fish-feed for the poultry industry.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony, Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama said that this project is part of numerous projects that have been aimed at boosting the fishing industry.
Construction of a fishing harbour at Elmina and Jamestown in Accra will begin the end of 2013, he added.
The President also said that the plans were advanced to establish modern fish landing bays attached with cold stores and parking lounges for canoe and boats at all the beaches.
