Wild salmon harvest hits record 261 million fish

The harvest of pink salmon meanwhile has reached 210.3 million fish, far exceeding the previous record harvest of 161 million humpies in 2005.

The preliminary total released by state fisheries biologists also shows harvests of 29.3 million sockeye, 17.6 million chum, 3,804,000 silver and 304,000 king salmon.

For Prince William Sound alone, the preliminary harvest reached 93.9 million fish, including 87.8 million humpies, 3.5 million chum, 2.3 million sockeye, 284,000 coho and 10,000 king salmon. That includes 1.8 million fish in the Copper River drift district, including 1.6 million red, 148,000 silver, 63,000 pink, 11,000 chum and 9,000 Chinook.

Southeast Alaska harvesters have delivered to processors some 98 million salmon, including 84.6 million humpies, 9.9 million chum, 2.4 million silver, 867,000 sockeye and 224,000 king salmon.

Kodiak processors have received 30.8 million salmon of all species, including 27.4 million pink, 2.4 million sockeye, 789,000 chum, 154,000 coho and 44,000 king.

At Chignik, the harvest to date is 3.5 million fish, including 2.4 million red, 869,000 pink, 154,000 chum, 33,000 coho and 3,000 Chinook, while on the Alaska Peninsula, the harvest now stands at 12 million salmon, including 7.8 million pink, 2.9 million red, 1,070,000 chum, 291,000 silver and 7,000 king. The bulk of the Alaska Peninsula harvest – more than 11 million fish, came from the South Peninsula.
