More than GBP 770 million (EUR 915 million, USD 1.23 billion), worth of fish was landed by UK fishermen last year, according to figures published Thursday by the Marine Management Organization (MMO). This represents a 7 percent decrease in value, while quantity rose 5 percent.

The decrease in value is primarily due to a large reduction in the average price of pelagic fish.

The annual “UK Sea Fisheries Statistics 2012” report shows 627,000 metric tons (MT) of fish, including shellfish, were landed into British ports and abroad.

The quantity of landings of demersal fish increased by 1 percent between 2011 to 2012, despite quantity falling by 24 percent since 2002. Pelagic and shellfish landings both increased by 7 percent between 2011 and 2012.

In 2002, demersal fish accounted for almost half of total landings by value. By 2012, this had fallen to 34 percent, with pelagic and shellfish comprising 27 percent and 39 percent respectively. This is the second year that shellfish had the largest share in terms of value of sales.

Scottish vessels accounted for 58 percent of the quantity of UK vessel landings, while English vessels accounted for 30 percent.

Exactly 6,406 fishing vessels comprised the UK fishing industry in 2012 with about 12,450 fishermen.

Imports rose to 754,000 MT, up 5 percent from 2011. Over the same period, exports also increased by 7 percent to 466,000 MT.
