Indonesian expects not to import rice this year as the country has achieved self sufficiency on the commodity, Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Rajasa said here on Wednesday.

"For rice, we have had self sufficiency, hopefully we will not import it this year," Minister Hatta said after a meeting over how to raise foods production at Coordinating Ministry for Economy.

This Southeast Asia's largest economy is forecast to produce 76 million tons of rice this year, the staple food for most of its 238 million population.

Indonesia expects to post 10 million tons in rice surplus next year.

To boost rice production, Minister Hatta said the government would focus on intensification effort in Java Island and extensification effort in other parts of the country.
