Over the past few weMoroccan Cantaloupeeks, Moroccan Cantaloupe and Charentais melon producers have started an aggressive marketing strategy, based on reporting the fact that the New Delhi virus is not only affecting Spanish courgettes, but also melons and watermelons.

The goal for these producers is for French operators to change their suppliers and redirect their programs, favouring Moroccan producers. They state that Almeria's and Murcia's growers could be affected by the New Delhi virus and suffer shortages during the period of highest demand.

Given the situation, French operators are showing caution and have not altered any of their plans or programs. It is not ideal, with Fruit Logistica around the corner, for importers and platforms to try closing their deals with Morocco and Spain for all kinds of melons.

Moroccan melon producers hope to increase their market share in France, which is one of the largest consumers of this product in the European Union.
