German consumer organisations have stated that a uniform indication for vegetarian and vegan foods is needed.
Present indications on such products make consumers sceptical, said Sophie Herr of Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (vzbv), speaking to Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung.
With some 'vegetable hamburgers' containing fowl and some ‘potato chips’ containing animal fats, such an indicator would be widely welcomed.
The Federal Council of Germany has called for better indications on products.
The Federal Council has called on the federal German government to put national rules in place.
However, the government has indicated it wishes to wait for presentations by the European Commission, before initiating such changes.
