As the debate over how to save embattled fruit canner SPC Ardmona (SPCA) rages on, a dispute has broken out between Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Shepparton MP, Dr Sharman Stone.

Australia's federal government decided not to give the processor the AUD25 million (USD22.27 mln) in support that it had requested (FOODNEWS January 30). Commenting on the decision, Abbott said that the processor's difficulties were down to "over generous" staff working conditions, including two years of redundancy payments, a number of generous "allowances, and nine weeks of paid leave.
