Tetra Pak, a Switzerland-based provider of food processing and packaging solutions, has introduced bio-based caps for Tetra Rex gable top packages used in milk and fruit juice packaging.
The move forms a part of the company's strategy to produce completely renewable packages and comes after it reported an 80% rise in bio-caps delivery in 2013.
The bio-based version of TwistCap OSO 34 has been developed using high density polyethylene derived from sugar cane, the company claims.
By using bio-based caps, the amount of renewable material in Tetra Rex gable top packages increases by 4%, which will help in enhancing the performance of the package by retaining the functionality and recyclability.
Tetra Pak Product director Christina Chester said, "Launches of bio-based caps have been appreciated by customers like Valio, the Finnish dairy who is the first to use the new version of TwistCap OSO 34 for its products.
"We are glad that customers see value in our efforts to help them boost their environmental profile."
Customers using the standard TwistCap OSO 34 can change to the bio-based version without upgrading their existing filling machines.
