A Tasmanian salmon producer has received Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) sustainability certification, a first for Australian seafood companies.
The company, Tassal, received the certification for its Macquarie Harbour farms. Mark Ryan, Tassal’s CEO and managing director, called the ASC certification the “gold standard” for salmon farming, and that Tassal was the first Australian company to get it.
“This is an excellent outcome for the company after a lot of hard work by many people in the organization,” Ryan said.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has worked with Tassal since 2012 to help develop sustainable aquaculture, and seek the ASC certification.
“WWF congratulates Tassal on achieving the region’s first ASC certification as a great example of an Australian company demonstrating global leadership on sustainability.” said WWF-Australia CEO Dermot O’Gorman.
