The Metro Group has announced it is using new technology to improve its supply chain in fish and meat categories.
A new smartphone app will inform Metro’s customer where the fish being sold in its stores is coming from.
The technology will also provide information on the type of fish, how it was caught and its processing times.
In addition to this, the software will provide information about the origin, processing and origins of a range of meat products on offer to shoppers.
Metro partnered with GS1 Germany in the development of the smartphone-related solution, which it said offers a harmonised traceability system for the first time to customers.
All parties in the supply chain can enter product information in their systems, which are then consolidated online.
A user can access detailed information on products with the use of product codes and a search tool. Developed to international standards, new product categories can be added as needed.
“For us, traceability is the key for sustainable sourcing and for increasing the quality and safety of our products,” said Metro Cash & Carry.
“This way, we will strengthen the trust of our commercial customers in our company and our products over the long-term".
