To help prepare for the future, along with the new harvest season, the firm “Frische Weidensdorfer Kartoffeln” (Friweika eG) is building a new storage- and logistic center on its terrain in Weidensdorf. Marko Wunderlich, board member of Friweika eG reports: “The new storage will be equipped for around 15,000 tons of potatoes.”
The new 6,000 square meter large construction cost the producer of potato and convenience products 10 million Euro. “The catering delivery service is also an integral component of Friweika.” Wunderlich explains. “This delivery service has a vast range of around 1,400 products at its disposal. In addition, we already have a logistical storage, but we have almost outgrown this by now.”
Wunderlich further describes: “The plan currently is to outsource our logistical storage and integrate it into our new storage- and logistic center.” The overall project is to be finished in 2017. Then, the new building will, among others, accommodate a large and extensive cooling area for fruit, vegetables, dairy products, meat and other frozen products, as well as the company's truck fleet.
45 years Friweika
“On September 5, 2015, we celebrate our firm's 45 year anniversary with a great open-door day”, Wunderlich explains. “In line with this event, we have planned that the first visitors get the opportunity to be the first to experience our new potato storage hall.”
Potatoes from Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt
The storage halls should be ready for the new harvest. Wunderlich explains Friweika's plans: “With this, we are planning to store our new harvest there.” Friweika obtains around 70 percent of its potatoes from a producer's association that maintains its fields in Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt.
