United Biscuits who produce McVitie's Toasting Waffles has decided to voluntarily withdraw the product from sale following a change to the recipe which was not stated on the front of the product.
The new recipe now contains lupin and milk which may cause a reaction and pose a health risk amongst those with an allergy or intolerance to either or both of these ingredients. Milk and lupin were correctly highlighted as allergens on the ingredients list at the back of the product but the new recipe was not flagged on the front of the packaging.
The Food Standards Agency advises that if food manufacturers choose to change their ingredients, it would be good practice to indicate this on the front of the packaging, such as stating that the item has a ‘new recipe’ for example, to alert allergic consumers of the changes.
The FSA would also like to remind consumers with allergies and intolerances to make sure they always check the labelling to ensure they avoid foods that could make them ill.
