British retailer Tesco will stop selling sugary drinks at its supermarkets across the country in a bid to tackle childhood obesity in the country.
This follows the retailer's announcement in May to increase healthy product offerings under its own-label and to reduce sugar content in soft drinks, The Grocer reported.
The retailer will not carry Capri-Sun and AG Barr's Rubicon drinks containing added-sugars, effective September when children go back to school after summer break.
Tesco soft drinks buying manager David Beardmore was quoted by The Grocer as saying: "This is part of our 10-point plan against obesity and we have decided that from September we will only sell no-added-sugar drinks in the kids' juice category."
Lucozade Ribena Suntory said in a statement: "We believe it is important to offer choice for parents. We will have no-added-sugar flavours available in multi-pack cartons."
The initiative is being backed by health campaigners who expect other supermarkets to follow the lead set by Tesco.
