The latest update from CFIA states that Everspring Farms Ltd is recalling Salba brand Chia Seeds -- Premium Ground on grounds of possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled products carry these details on their cover - Salba Chia Seeds - Premium Ground 150 g, Lot # SSSBC150211-41 BB/MA APR-2017.

The CFIA stated that this product has been distributed throughout retail outlets across the country.

The latest update comes after CFIA test results found risk elements. The CFIA is conducting an investigation, which could lead to recall of other products. The agency is ensuring that the industry removes the tainted products from marketplace to avoid illnesses.

Originally, chia seed powder product was recalled on 16 November 2015. The CFIA advices that the recalled products should either be discarded or returned at the store of purchase.

Salmonella-contaminated food may not look or smell spoilt but yet can make people sick. The bacterium may affect young children, pregnant women, elderly people, and people with weak immunity system, causing serious to fatal infections.

Some of the symptoms that affected people may experience include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Other long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
