Following the directions of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), the Supreme Court has said that testing of Maggi noodles samples will now be undertaken by the Mysuru-based Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) lab. This follows a fresh appeal from Nestle challenging the NCDRC order directing the testing of Maggi noodles sample by a Chennai lab.

An apex court bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Prafulla C Pant said that the local commissioner shall collect samples of Maggi noodles from the companies' Lucknow-based godown and send them to the lab. The court said that the report of the testing would be submitted before it, according to information from public domain.

The court said the NCDRC would not proceed with the hearing of the class action suit filed by the Union of India claiming Rs 640 crore from Nestle for marketing noodles with suspect quality.

CFTRI has not yet received any communication to this effect. “However, once we do so we will adhere to the orders of the Supreme Court,” said Dr Asha Martin, head, Food Safety and Analytical Quality Control Laboratory, CSIR-CFTRI.
