Drinking coffee may reduce risk of liver cirrhosis, a new review suggests. Liver cirrhosis is a condition with which the liver suffers long term and persistent injury from inadequate diet, alcohol drinking and viral infections.
The review is based on non-trial studies published before July 2015 and trials are needed to confirm that coffee drinking is the cause for the reduced risk of liver cirrhosis in coffee drinkers.
The review reported in the Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics shows each additional two cups of coffee a day was associated with 44% reduced risk of cirrhosis and 50% reduced risk of death from cirrhosis. (David Liu)
