The Bologna wholesale market (Caab) has reported how the prices of aubergines and red peppers have sky-rocketed.
"Red peppers have become extremely rare in the past week/ten days. Abroad (especially Spain) prices reach €2.50 per kg, which is just too high. In Sicily, prices start at €1.50 per kg depending on the product," explains Fruttital. At the moment, peppers are coming from Spain, Morocco and Sicily.
The situation of yellow peppers is much calmer, and therefore prices are lower. "We are talking about €1.30/2.40 per kg for produce from Morocco."
Aubergine volumes are low too, especially those from Sicily. "In just a few days, prices have risen from 20-30 cents per kg and reached €1.20-1.30, while top prices used to be 80 cents/ €1."
