Glyphosate - the active ingredient found in the world most widely used herbicide called roundup has found its way to some breakfast foods such as bagels, cereals, and eggs, according to a new report released by the Alliance for Natural Health USA (ANH-USA).  Some foods contain glyphosate at a level higher than the ADI of glyphosate determined by the U.S. government.

The World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen.   Studies have linked glyphosate to increased risk of a number of cancers including breast cancer, thyroid cancer, kidney cancer, pancreas cancer, liver cancer, bladder cancer, and myeloid leukemia, among others.

The ANH-USA tested 12 commonly used breakfast foods and 24 ingredients and found detectable levels of glyphosate in ten of the sampled foods.

Instant Oatmeal Strawberries & Cream 1,327.1 (ppb)
Whole Wheat Bagels 491.9
Organic Multibagels  151.5
Whole Grain Bread: whole wheat 403.0
Organic Killer Whole Wheat Bread 136.4
Hot Cereal Whole Grain  260.6
Large Eggs  102
Organic Cage Free Antibiotic Free Large Eggs  169
Organic Coffee Creamer  104
Organic Soy Creamer Non GMO  86

Interestingly, some organic foods are tainted with glyphosate.  And organic cage free antibiotic free large eggs are even found to contain glyphosate at a level that exceeds the FDA Tolerance level, which is 50 ppb in eggs.  Also, foods with the highest levels of glyphosate including oatmeal, bagels, bread, and wheat cereal come from non- Roundup Ready crops.

The ANH-USA study also found some foods with glyphosate at a level at which when the food is consumed, a person would have a daily intake of glyphosate that is lower than the ADI set by the EPA, which is 1.750 mg per kg body weight per day.

All Purpose Flour <75 (ppb)
Organic Unbleached Flour <75
Corn Flakes <75
Organic Corn Flakes <75
Organic Instant Oatmeal <75
Yogurt, French Vanilla <75
Organic Yogurt, French Vanilla <75
Frozen Hash Brown Potatoes 34.4
Organic Frozen Hash Browns <13
Russet Potato 24.1
Organic Potato <13
Organic Cream of Wheat <75
Organic Soy Creamer  <75
Dairy Creamer <75

Glyphosate-containing herbicides like Roundup is used to kill weeds.  Genetically modified crops are more resistant to herbicides with glyphosate, and more glyphosate can be used for GMO crops.  For that reason, GMO crops may be tainted with high levels of glyphosate than conventional crops.  But conventional crops can contain ever higher levels of glyphosate, depending on how the herbicide is applied.   Organic crops are supposedly free of herbicides.  The study indicates that organic foods are not always as organic as thought.  (David Liu)
