According to a statement from Mr Ledó Ferenc, head of the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organisation (FruitVeB), the country is planning to export between 20 and 25 thousand tonnes of peppers, mainly of the Kapia variety, of which they are producing more and more.
He reported that between 15 and 16 kilograms of peppers are consumed per family in Hungary. In the high season, from mid-June, these will cost between 200 and 300 HUF (0.63-0.95 Euro), depending on quality. The Kapia will be 25 percent more expensive and hot peppers will cost around HUF 60-100 per kilo (0.19-0.32 Euro).
Most of Hungary's pepper exports go to Germany, with them accounting for two percent of all German imports of Hungarian goods. Other important destinations include Austria, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries.
Also, Hungary's imports are falling. In 2013, 11 thousand tonnes of peppers came from abroad, but last year it was only 7 thousand, and Mr Ledó said that they don't expect more than that this year. Imports come mainly from Spain, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco.
