The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reports that Channel Fish Processing Co., Inc., headquartered in Boston, MA, has issued a Class I recall of 840 pounds of its breaded Swai (Vietnamese catfish) products. These products may contain undeclared milk allergens.

Like many recent recalls by diverse manufacturers of breaded fish and chicken products, this recall was prompted after a supplier alerted FSIS on June 14, 2017 that the product’s breaded coating might contain milk. Milk is not reported on the swai products’ ingredients label or allergy statement.

The breaded swai products affected by the recall were manufactured on February 22nd, March 20th, and May 2nd and distributed in 10-pound corrugated boxes to institutional locations in the state of Indiana. The recalled items are: “North Atlantic BRAND APPROX80Z RAW BREADED SWAI FILLET” (lot code: 23445, date code: 17122), “North Atlantic BRANDAPPROX40Z RAW BREADED SWAI FILLET’ (lot code: 23114, date code: 17079), and “Channel Brand APPROX40Z RAW BREADED SWAI FILLET” (lot code: 22888, date code: 17053).

A “Class I” recall means that consumption of the recalled food by people who are allergic to an ingredient it contains may cause them to become sick or even suffer death. These breaded swai products should be disposed of or returned to their place of purchase.
