Vantage Foods in Canada is recalling ground lean veal from the market because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria. The meat was sold in Food Basics supermarket locations in Ontario. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recalled food is Ground Lean Veal in variable size packages. There is no brand name on the product because it was prepared for Food Basics. The UPC number starts with 0 226811, and the code on the meat is Best Before 2017NO04.

Officials are concerned that this product may be frozen in consumers’ freezers. Check to see if you have it. If you aren’t sure, check with your retailer.

If you do have this product in your home, do not eat it, even if you are going to cook it. Raw meat can cross-contaminate utensils and surfaces and other foods in the refrigerator, and during food preparation. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged packages, or take it back to the retailer for a refund.

Food that is contaminated with this pathogenic bacteria doesn’t smell, taste, or look spoiled. This bacteria can make you very sick. Symptoms of E. coli food poisoning include severe and painful abdominal cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody or watery, and a mild fever. This illness can progress into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in some people. That complication can cause kidney failure, strokes, and seizures.

If you ate this product and do feel sick, or develop theses symptoms, see your doctor and tell him you ate this recalled product. E. coli infections should never be treated with antibiotics, since this can increase the risk of HUS development.
