Giant/Martin’s brand frozen sweet corn is being recalled for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to a post on the company website. No illnesses have been reported to date to the company in connection with this issue.

The recalled product is Giant/Martin’s brand Frozen Whole Kernel Sweet Corn in 16 ounce packages. The UPC number on the product is 68826700676 and the best by date is October 2019. All date codes are recalled, even though only that best by date is affected. It’s sold in the frozen vegetable set, end cap, or frozen first case.d

If you bought this product, don’t eat it, even if you plan to cook it in the microwave oven, stovetop, or in the oven. Products contaminated with pathogenic bacteria can cross-contaminate refrigerators, freezers, countertops, utensils, and other foods. Throw this corn away in a double bagged or sealed package so other people can’t access it, or take it back to the store where you bought it for a full refund.

Then clean your refrigerator and/or freezer with a solution of 1 gallon of warm water to 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to kill any bacteria. Remember that Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, and freezing temperatures don’t kill it. Then rinse the appliance shelves with plain water and dry them. Wash your hands well with soap and running water after handling this package.

If you ate this product, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, for the next 70 days. Symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, muscle stiffness, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. The symptoms can also be similar to the flu. If you do feel sick, see your doctor.
