APCO celebrated the achievements of 14 Australian organisations from a broad range of sectors, including manufacturing, retail, transport, technology, hospitality and pharmaceutical.
The awards last week recognised the Australian businesses playing a role in the war on waste by reducing the harmful effect of packaging on the environment.
Winner of the 2018 Food and Beverage Sector Award and Outstanding Achievement in Packaging Design Award, Campbell Arnott’s Australia was praised for making significant improvements in its sustainable packaging and environmental performance.
According to APCO, the organisation demonstrated an unwavering commitment to operating more sustainably and in 2017, facilitated mandatory sustainability training with its internal packaging team.
They were also successful in converting over 1,400 tonnes of tertiary packaging from bleached white board to higher recycled content domestic brown board. Through this, Campbell Arnott’s was able to close the loop on paper and corrugated board recycling, APCO says.
Nestlé Australia, was shortlisted for its range of commendable long-term packaging sustainability initiatives, results of which saw the organisation save over 2,800 tonnes of packaging in the Oceania region over the last ten years.
Other finalist organisations include Smith’s Snackfood and Sakata Rice Snacks Australia, who in the last year alone, saved 7.4 tonnes of flexible film, 19.2 tonnes of polymer and 4.8 tonnes of stretch wrap, Mountain Bread who actively seek out suppliers who use recyclable materials and continually review packaging design to increase recycled content, and Fonterra Brands who is an active member of a number of industry sustainability committees and who works closely with suppliers and partners to develop a complete life cycle approach to packaging, APCO says.
APCO CEO Brooke Donnelly praised the Australian brands for their commitment to reducing the harmful impacts of packaging on the environment.
“All the winners and finalists of the 2018 APCO Awards have demonstrated that no matter where their business sits within the packaging supply chain, there is always opportunity for positive change,” she said.
“This year, we wanted to celebrate the industry members and key stakeholders who are leading the way in packaging sustainability.
“With the 2025 target to make all packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable now in sight, industry collaboration and innovation have never been more important.”
