US-based company R L Zeigler has recalled 11,664lb of ready-to-eat (RTE) poultry and meat sausage products, as they may have been contaminated with pieces of metal.

The poultry and meat sausage products that are subject to recall include 24oz plastic packages containing approximately nine links of ‘A Tradition Of Great Taste Red Hots’ Zeigler sausages with a 24 January 2019 use by date, and 24oz plastic packages containing approximately nine links of Extra Hot Zeigler sausages with the same use by date.

The RTE Red Hot chicken and pork sausage items were produced on 29 November 2018 and bear the establishment number EST P-9156S inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to retail locations across the country.

L Zeigler identified the issue after receiving complaints from consumers on 13 and 27 December 2018 and notified the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on 29 December.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

Any person concerned about injury or illness has been urged to contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some products may be in peoples’ freezers and has urged them to throw these away or return them to the place of purchase.

The recall has been classified as Class 1, which represents a health hazard situation with a chance of serious, adverse health consequences or even death as a result of the consumption of the products.

In December 2018, CTI Foods recalled nearly 29,028lb of frozen, ready-to-eat (RTE) pork and poultry sausage products as they may have been contaminated with pieces of metal.
