Canadian government to strengthen food import regulations

Zoom in font  Zoom out font Published: 2012-04-26
Core Tip: The Canadian government has said it intends to develop new food import regulations in collaboration with industry, as part of its Food and Consumer Safety Action Plan.
The new measures will require food importers to be licensed and have measures in place to keep unsafe food out of the market, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said. The agency has proposed a user fee for importers, and is accepting comments from industry on this fee until June 29.

Agriculture minister Gerry Ritz said:“The vast majority of food entering Canada is safe, but we are continuing to adapt in response to the increasingly complex global marketplace. Canada imports food from more than 190 countries, and our Government is taking action to maintain the high level of food safety that consumers expect and deserve.”

The CFIA said it is encouraging food importers to sign up for email alerts on the new regulations, via this link .
