The company, which listed $2.1m in assets and more than $2.5m in liabilities in documents, filed in US Bankruptcy Court in Denver, and noted that it has taken this step after several wrongful death lawsuits were filed against it following the outbreak.
Last year, the Listeria outbreak spread through 28 US states, affecting 146 people.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Jensen Farms did not properly store the cantaloupes after they were harvested and it failed to chlorinate the water it used to wash the cantaloupes, which allowed Listeria to grow.
Listeria is a type of bacteria, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
