Core Tip: Parmigiano-Reggiano and Grana Padano cheese – worth over €250m (£200m, $320m) - has been destroyed in the recent earthquake that shook northern Italy.
According to reports from the country, over 300,000 wheels of the popular Italian hard cheeses were destroyed after warehouses and storage facilities collapsed. Machinery and specialised equipment was also destroyed.

'Fresh' six month old cheeses were worst affected by the quake, after seasoning shelves – also known as ‘scalere’ – collapsed.

“The earthquake was very strong and heavily damaged the structure of many warehouses as well as thousands of tonnes [of the cheeses],”
head of the Grana Padano Consortium, Stefano Berni told the Italian ANSA news outlet.

Berni told the Italian news outlet ANSA that the €250m damage estimate was“very conservative.”

The magnitude 6.0 earthquake, which hit regions of northern Italy on Sunday, killed at least seven people and left thousands homeless.
