Core Tip: The earthquake that has struck northern Italy on 20 May 2012 will affect the production and export of Italy's famous hard cheeses - Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano.
Both these cheeses are grated over pasta items, sliced over salads or served in small portions.

Nearly 300,000 wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano, and 100,000 wheels of Grana Padano were affected when they fell from the shelves in the warehouse where they were subjected to a two-year long seasoning process.

According to National farmers' group Coldiretti, about 10% of the production of Reggiano and 2% of Grana Padano has been damaged by the earthquake, reported Rueters.com.

In addition, the production of milk used for making cheese was affected as several cows died due to the collapse of stables or were traumatized by the quake, which affected the quality and output of milk.

The damage to the food industry due to the quake is expected to be around €200m, Coldiretti said.
