Meat in cold storage increases in April

Core Tip: Frozen meat and poultry supplies in cold storage on April 30, 2011, increased over the comparable period in 2011 with frozen pork supplies showing the strongest gains, according National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
Total pork in freezers was up 8 percent in April compared to March, and up 20 percent from 2011, according to NASS. Pork bellies increased 13 percent from March and jumped 41 percent compared to 2011 totals.

Total frozen red meat supplies increased 5 percent in April compared to March, and 19 percent compared to 2011, NASS said. Frozen beef stores rose 3 percent from March totals, and increased 17 percent compared to 2011.

Total frozen poultry supplies increased 10 percent in April compared to March, but declined 6 percent from a year ago, according to NASS. Total chicken stocks advanced 6 percent from March totals, but fell 18 percent from 2011. Total pounds of turkey in freezers climbed 17 percent from March, and advanced 20 percent from April 30, 2011, NASS reported.
