"There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing wine for an outdoor event like a barbecue," says Zanzarella, a certified specialist of wine. "Food pairings are important, but weather and the eclectic tastes of multiple guests or family can make decisions difficult. Don't fret, keep it simple with a quality Italian Pinot Grigio or juicy Napa Valley Merlot. These wines have clean, straightforward flavors that provide drinking pleasure for everyone."
He recommends a Sauvignon Blanc for a light grilled meal like a lemon pepper chicken breast or rosemary pork chop. The crisp citrus and mineral flavors of the wine pair well with lean meat. For grilled burgers, steak or ribs, Zanzarella recommends a Shiraz. The dark black fruits and subtle black pepper on the finish complement well with the fatty meats. Also, the tannins are robust, matching the red meat, but are very well-integrated, so you don't dry out too much on a hot day.
"Many of our customers are living a much healthier lifestyle and offering their friends and family a lighter backyard fare," says Pierce. "For something like a fresh seasonal fruit salad, consider a Vinho Verde. It is light, crisp and slightly effervescent."
Not to be overlooked is the versatility of a dry rose' from France, Zanzarella adds. Few wines are as well-suited for sipping at the beach, in the backyard or on the boat. They tend to be lower in alcohol, so you can enjoy more, plus their refreshing qualities are perfect for the hottest of summer days.
