Reason for Warning

Ephedrine alkaloids are compounds derived from the plant Ephedra (Ma Huang). Ephedrine may also be chemically synthesized. Ephedrine is authorized for the relief of nasal congestion but is not authorized for sale in Canada as a stimulant or weight loss product.

Phenolphthalein was previously used as a laxative but is no longer authorized for sale in Canada because it may cause cancer.

According to the U.S. FDA alerts, these products are sold on various websites.

Possible Side-Effects

In addition to heart attack and stroke, side-effects associated with sibutramine include increased blood pressure and heart rate, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping and constipation.

Side-effects associated with ephedrine include fast or abnormal heartbeat, chest pain, high blood pressure, dizziness, insomnia, and facial flushing.

Additional side-effects associated with phenolphthalein include decreased blood pressure, skin rash and gastrointestinal bleeding.
