Core Tip: Most flavor packets in Canada do not contain undeclared allergens or gluten, according to a new study released by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
For the study, CFIA analysed 100 samples that were taken from retail stores in 2010-2011. Products were assessed for seven allergens - soy, milk, egg, peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts and sesame, and gluten.

The study results showed that 25 samples contained detectable levels, of which only three were recalled as the rest were determined by Health Canada to be safe for consumers, including those with allergies.

The most common undeclared allergens detected were soy, milk and gluten. There were no undeclared peanuts, almonds or hazelnuts in any of the samples.

Flavor packets are premixed packages of herbs and/or spices that enhance the flavor of finished food. Examples of flavors include sauce mixes, drink mixes, seasoning mixes, soup bases and spice mixes.
