By combining their respective regulatory, scientific and industry expertise, Fera and Waters Corp will focus on helping organisations better detect contaminated food at farms, ports and manufacturing plants. The laboratory will help organisations ensure food is safe and meets regulatory standards.
Fera chief executive Adrian Belton said: “This is an excellent collaborative opportunity, which will lead to real benefits throughout Europe and beyond. Fera’s food science experts are internationally recognised and now, they will be able to pass on that expertise through this new purpose-built training centre.”
Waters Corp executive vice-president Art Caputo said: “We are very pleased to partner with Fera in establishing this lab near York. We believe this collaboration will lead to better science and technology, and that this, in turn, will help us raise the bar on food safety.”
The food import and export market in Europe has an annual turnover of more than £690bn (+€690bn) and the establishment of the new laboratory follows an alarming rate of food safety incidents, highlighted in a recent report by the European Commission (EC).
