The National Agriculture Manure Management Program (NAMMP) programme will look at a range of different issues related to livestock manure and GHG emissions, including whether manure can be turned into a low-emisison, high efficiency fertiliser.
APL general manager for Research and Innovation, Dr Darryl D’Souza, said:“The programme focuses on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) mitigation from alternative and improved manure management systems and lays down the foundations to further develop Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) methodologies and subsequent carbon credit opportunities for intensive livestock producers.
“This new funding will certainly enable intensive industries to fast track development of new CFI methodologies which will lead to better mitigation of GHG emissions. This is a great achievement collectively for the intensive livestock industries.”
The country’s livestock Research and Develoment Corporations (RDCs) - including Australian Pork Limited (APL), Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and Chicken Meat Council (RIRDC) - won a collaborative research bid worth $6.19 million, which includes $2.97m from the Australian government’s Carbon Farming Future’s programme.
