China's vice-president Xi Jinping has called on educational institutions to raise the profile of food safety issues and prevent misconduct in the industry.
Xi made the remarks while visiting Beijing’s China Agricultural University, saying: "Food safety is a significant livelihood issue. Society should be mobilised to focus on the issue to create a sound social environment."
He encouraged children to develop healthy eating habits and urged agrotechnology workers to continue to boost China’s research in the field.
"With a huge population and scarce land and water resources, our country must rely on technology to ensure the supply of agricultural products," Xi said.
He also called on universities to cultivate agrotechnology talent and explore more effective ways to use technical breakthroughs for agriculture by farmers in rural areas.
