Kantar Worldpanel’s latest supermarket share report showed the average shopper spend to be €21.30. Commercial director at Kantar David Berry said this was due to shoppers watching what they spend in the run-up to the December budget.
Berry also explained that the market had fallen by 0.6% in the last year and price inflation was at 2.3%, which he said meant grocery staples were becoming more expensive and the average shopper had less to spend on them.
Berry said: “As speculation around the December budget increases, shoppers are looking to tighten their grip on household spending. As a result the size of the average shopping basket is at its lowest level for seven years, dropping from an average of €22.50 last year to €21.30.”
