Packaging has always been seen as the integral part of any product be it food, pharmaceutical, healthcare, machinery, or any allied industry.
While packaging is an important part of presenting a product, the hardwork and the research & development that happens behind the stage to bring that product to the shelf generally goes unnoticed. It is only the final packaged product, which the customer sees and buys it.
Nevertheless, it’s a known fact that attractive packaging has helped many companies increase revenues in the short term.

The packaging industry is no different facing challenges and disparities and the biggest being the unorganised sector.

Survey results
Presence
31% of the packaging professionals are present in south of India and second major presence is seen in north India. 79% packaging professionals employed in the industry are qualified packaging professionals and 57% professionals in the industry are post-graduates.
Industry-wise spread
As per company demographics, industry-wise spread of the packaging professionals - pharmaceutical and food were seen at the 2 & 3 highest share of 25% & 23% respectively. Highest share is of packaging materials with 28%.
As per the job profile, the packaging professionals spread as per work experience. Professionals with 0-2 years of experience were the highest with 27% of the share, 6-10 yrs with 23% of the share, followed by 3-5 years experience with 18% of the share.
Position or level
As per the work experience the biggest disparity in the position or level is seen with middle management with the highest share of nearly 50% followed by junior level at 25% share. Further to this the disparity in the salary is the biggest as the salary structure emerges and is not in accordance to the years of experience and position. The salary structures seem to be varying at multiple levels due to varying factors - like the zone-wise variation, industry-wise variation etc. As clearly seen from the bar chart below the Rs 2-4 lakh and 5-9 lakh salary / annum have the same share - 29% each and the dip in the share in the consecutive slabs is sudden. From 29% share of the first two slabs the third slab share is seen at 17%. Correlation of the work experience, position and annual salary cannot be established directly by the data as a huge variation in all the three parameters is seen from maximum to minimum data points.
This survey is an attempt to understand the Indian packaging professionals’ salary model and indeed brought the point strongly that salary model for Indian packaging professionals lacks standardisation a huge gap and scope of evaluation and rework exists.
